Manny Pacquiao dominates Joshua Clottey


Manny Pacquiao of the Philippines dominated Joshua Clottey, a native of Ghana who lives in New York, from the opening bell Saturday night to retain his welterweight title and cement his status as the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.

The bout at Cowboys Stadium attracted 50,994 — the biggest fight crowd in the United States since Julio Cesar Chavez fought Pernell Whitaker in San Antonio in 1993.

One ringside judge gave Pacquiao (51-3-2) every round, while the two others gave him all but one round.

Of Pacquiao's last six opponents, Clottey (35-4) is the only one to make it to the final bell.

"He's a very tough opponent," said Pacquiao, who earned at least $12 million.

Final statistics showed Pacquiao landing 246 of 1,231 punches, compared with 108 of 399 punches for Clottey.

After the third round, trainer Freddie Roach told Pacquiao: "Everything's working now. It's easy."

Clottey often kept his gloves up high in front of his face.

"He has speed; I lost the fight," Clottey said. "He's fast, that's why I was taking my time." Associated Press
