CONFESSION OF WANGGO GALLAGA : HIV POSITIVE AND HIV ADVOCATE

Posted by Benedick.Ramos on 6:23 PM

Just last month, lifestyle writer Wanggo Gallaga, son of critically-acclaimed filmmaker Peque Gallaga, announced to the nation that he is HIV positive.

"I'm gay," says the younger Gallaga. He makes no attempt to soften his story. He believes he contracted the HIV virus during a time he was promiscuous and found his various sexual partners online. He laughs. "You want numbers?"

Gallaga talks about how the public knows so little about AIDS—about being safe, about the dangers, about the very real possibility of contracting it in the Philippines.

He blames no one for his condition.

"I took a gamble and I lost. I'm accountable."

Gallaga decided to tell his story to give the AIDS awareness cause more substance, and hopes that by coming out, less people wil contract the virus. He had consulted his family, all of whom supported the choice he made.

"My name is Wanggo Gallaga. I'm twenty-nine years old, I'm a writer, I'm HIV positive, and I'm telling my story so that others will be aware."

On Friday, January 16, Wanggo Gallaga will tell his story on ANC's Storyline Life, at 6 pm, along with escaped political prisoner Raymond Manalo and cancer survivor Eloisa Salisi. Replays on Friday, 11 pm, Sunday 3 pm, and Monday 3 am

Risky Business is a webisode series from www.positivism.ph that talks about taking risks and living with HIV, as told by Wanggo Gallaga, Positivism's cover boy for its second issue.

CONFESSION OF WANGGO GALLAGA : HIV POSITIVE AND HIV ADVOCATE

HIV and all health risks are intertwined around the issue of promiscuity, because a promiscuous society is prone to sexually transmitted disease. The way I understood Wanggo's statement is that, one who catches HIV should not be blamed for being promiscuous coz he may or may not be promiscuous. But then again, if someone is promiscuous he is more prone to HIV.

The problem about labels is it doesn't help us define things or define who we really are. It doesn't help us because it is all accusatory and not meant to make us better.

When we are young and having fun we don't come up with this wisdom of knowing what to do with our lives until tragedy hits us. It has to be something tragic that would open our eyes, to make is rethink about the direction we take and how to be responsible for our actions. "Live for the moment " is not to be interpreted as reckless abandon. Wanggo is trying to tell us that in trying to find yourself , to get to that level of maturity as a person we don't have to go through the rough and risky side of self- realization.
