About the Candidates Courtesy of Ms. Earth

MISS AUSTRALIA | Kelly Louise Maguire

Age: 24
Height: 175 cm.
Weight: 58 kg
I am proud to represent Australia as I have lived here all my life. Through my extensive travels I have seen some natural environments that have severely degraded and damaged through human existence (use and abuse).

Describe your childhood when you were growing up from 8 to 13 years old.
I was privileged enough to be able to witness my father in various environmental activities including campaigning to preserve our native bushland close to where our family home is. A property development company wanted to destroy the bush habitat of many local Australian native animals to build very big houses, and my father lobbied against this and managed to get quite a lot of media coverage. This was probably my biggest childhood environmental experience, however I do have others such as going on bushwalks, climbing Mount Kosciuszko (the highest mountain in Australia), travelling to New Zealand to go skiing and other fantastic family holidays. I also have fond memories of visiting wildlife parks and feeding the kangaroos, koalas and other native animals! We are very lucky to live in a beautiful part of Sydney very close to the beach, and I have always had an appreciation for the natural beach environment, and more than anything else I do love to go swimming and surfing, as well as just laying on the sand, enjoying the amazing place I am fortunate enough to call home. All in all I have been extremely lucky to have a supportive family that has always been happy for me to explore my interests such as swimming, music, athletics, netball, skiing, dancing and others – I would not be where I am today and I would not have been able to achieve all I have without my parents' support.

What lessons did you learn from your childhood/growing years?
I learned the value of family and how important it is to someone you love, to encourage them to do what makes them happy. Despite being very different people, I have formed bonds with various people as friends by also supporting them, and I believe that by talking and becoming friends with different people, we grow as individuals and become better people by expanding our horizons. I learned the value of our native environment, and through travelling in my early years I did discover how lucky I am to live where I live, and have the family that I have. Furthermore, I realised how important it is for all of the people who live in Australia to preserve our native environment, because the unique Australian wildlife is often endangered and we must do all we can to minimise our environmental footprint and protect the precious flora and fauna that is native only to our country. I learned also to challenge myself constantly by trying new things, and all of that combined is exactly why I am the determined and positive person I am today! By being taught from a young age to stand up for what I believe in (such as my father as a role model, particularly with the incident with the property developers) we can achieve success and become better and more strong-minded people.

What is your most memorable moment?
My most memorable moment was when my grandfather passed on. It is memorable in a tragic way that I will always find sad for the rest of my life, however it taught me that we have to seize the moment. He was an incredible person who dedicated most of his life and his time to charity – both with Surf Lifesaving Australia as well as the New South Wales Fire Brigade – and his selfless attitude was inspiring. Unfortunately I was only sixteen when he passed away so I did not fully appreciate all he did and what he lived for until a few years afterwards, but now that I can look back retrospectively I realise what an amazing individual he really was. He is always with me in spirit, and whenever I feel that something is difficult, I always imagine what he would advise me to help and it always makes me sure of who I am and the decisions I am making. It has made me realise how quickly life passes us by, and that to become a great person I must give all I have and try to be a good example for others, so hopefully I can leave a similar impression on my friends and family from my own experiences. I truly wish that there were more people on this earth like him, because it really would make this a more beautiful world to live in.

What is your environmental advocacy?
I particularly care about various aspects of environmental protection, and both are specific to Australia but could be equally relevant anywhere else in the world also. The first is water conservation, due to Australia being the driest habitable continent on earth. I have been advocating for a number of years to subsidise rainwater tanks for our suburban areas to reduce strain on our dam levels, and recently that has been supported by the state government of New South Wales, which is very exciting. I also encourage all of my friends to save water, because the worst offenders at wasting water are in my own demographic – young people that live in metropolitan areas of our major cities. The second issue I really wish to become more involved in is the protection of our native wildlife. We have always had problems of introduced species harming our native species such as rock wallabies and platypus – particularly rabbits eating their food supplies and domestic cats attacking small marsupials at night. I am spearheading a campaign for all people to become more responsible with their pets and to ensure they are not harming our natural environment!

MISS BAHAMAS | Aquelle Francesca Plakaris

Age: 24
Height: 178 cm.
Weight: 62 kilos
Measurements: 86-71-97
I have created the "Youth Earth Ambassadors" within our school system in the belief that educating the youth on the care of Mother Earth ensures her safety in the future.

Describe your childhood when you were growing up from 8 to 13 years old.
My childhood and growing-up years were spectacular and I would never forget the lasting memories. I grew up in a loving single parent home with my mother and younger sister. My fondest memories were spending quality time with my maternal and paternal grandmothers who taught me how to bake desserts, which I still enjoy doing. During my childhood, I enjoyed the arts & crafts, such as making ceramics and painting. Sunday evenings after dinner with my immediate and extended family, I enjoyed dressing in my mother's heels and dresses acting as a beauty queen. Also during my growing years, I developed a passion for learning about different cultures from around the world. Every day I, enjoyed reading because it was an enchanting get-away filled with magic, adventures, mysteries, princesses and princes.

What lessons did you learn from your childhood/growing years?
Lessons that I learned during the growing years of my life was to be appreciative and grateful for what I had. I also learned that hard work and perseverance always pays off at the end. My paternal Grandmother taught me to share my warm smile with others because that one smile could brighten their day. Finally, I learnt a powerful lesson from a former teacher “the power of dream lies within the strength of a dreamer".

What is your most memorable moment?
My most memorable moment was the day that I lost my best friend-My paternal grandmother, Rose Marie Plakaris. She always supported my dreams and aspirations, and even though I am not graced with her presence any longer, I know her love lives on inside of me. Besides teaching me how to bake, we enjoyed shopping together and even talking while watching the sunset on the beach or having a cup of tea.

What is your environmental advocacy?
My environmental advocacy is Marine conservation, which is the preservation and protection of ecosystems in oceans. It also focuses on the preservation of vulnerable marine species. I chose Marine conservation because of my love for my country’s beautiful waters, its coral reefs and the amazing species that know it as home. Advocates for marine life here in The Bahamas faces challenges each day in protecting our waters from destruction of coral reefs, fragmentation, pollutants, chemicals, and even poaching. One area of my action plan as Miss Earth Bahamas is to inspire the youth of The Bahamas on how to be environmental ambassadors and to work closely with Organizations that advocate the protection of our sea. Some of these organizations are Friends of the Environment, BREEF, and The Bahamas National Trust.
MISS BELGIUM | Melissa Vingerhoed

Age: 18
Height: 170 cm
Weight: 52 kgs
Measurements: 80-63-93
Occupation: Tourism Student
I was a little star and was always in front of the mirror dancing, or posing with my mother's high heels when I was a kid.

Describe your childhood when you were growing up from 8 to 13 years old.
During my childhood my parents have been really supportive to me. They want what's best for me and help me in whatever I want to do.

What lessons did you learn from your childhood/growing years?
I have learned that life is hard and that you have to work really hard and fight for what you want to achieve in life. Life is not easy and doesn't come as a fairytale. But if you work hard and you are happy about yourself, everything will be ok.

What is your most memorable moment?
Taking that one step on an airplane all by myself on my way to china. Leaving family and friends behind. Realizing that you are on your own for a while. But it felt good, it gave me confidence.

What is your environmental advocacy?
We do care about our environment and did not took actions years ago. We fight for less cars on the road and do more and more car pooling, actions to take the train and metro and plant trees. Lately we are having a lot of water problems because of the rain. People became homeless and animals died. Nowadays the water level in Belgium is increasing.
MISS BOLIVIA | Yovana O'Brien Mendez
Age: 19
Height: 180 cm.
Weight: 55 kilos
Measurements: 89-60-90
I was brought up in the lowlands of Bolivia where my father breeds cattle and my mother is a school teacher. We have seen our community grow from a small village on the edge of the jungle to the budding city it is today with all the ensuing environmental contamination.

I am studying 'Social Communication' with a view to reverse the damage much of which is due to ignorance.

Describe your childhood when you were growing up from 8 to 13 years old.
I have lived all my life in a village called Pailón. There, I had my education and have many friends.

What I most remember from my childhood is when I went out with my friends riding bicycles every afternoon and later we would return to my house to play with our dolls.

What lessons did you learn from your childhood/growing years?
In this phase of my growth I learnt many things from my parents; how to share, the value of friendship, how to be humble, the perseverance to accomplish that which one sets out to achieve and the faith, because faith moves mountains. I also understood that life is full of rewards, and that I should use each fall to help me grow as a person.

At this stage of my childhood, my personality was formed and I consolidated each of the values that had been indoctrinated in me.

What is your most memorable moment?
Four months ago, I was given the distinction of 'Exceptional Daughter' by the people of my village having participated in and won the crown of Miss Bicentenary.

I was able to receive the title with pride and enthusiasm on seeing the joy and satisfaction of my people and the feeling of their love and kindness has given me the strength to go forward.

What is your environmental advocacy?
My country, Bolivia, is at this moment suffering from too much environmental pollution due to the deforestation, burning of pastures and rubbish, affecting the air we breathe, and no doubt causing irreparable damage to the human body.

I advocate using the 'mass media' to make films of awareness, which show the actual results caused by the contamination, and broadcast on the television channels. Also, to visit schools to encourage the children, youth and teachers to care for our planet, thereby improving Earth-wellbeing.
MISS BOSNIA and HERZEGOVINA | Ema
MISS BOSNIA and HERZEGOVINA | Ema Golijanin

Age: 18
Height: 177 cm.
Weight: 57 kilos
Measurements: 89-63-93
I would like to finish college and have a secure future for myself and my family. I also like to travel a lot and see many places, meet new people and learn new cultures. I would like most of all to be an influential person at least in one stage of my life.

Describe your childhood when you were growing up from 8 to 13 years old.
I grew up in Sarajevo with my parents and my older brother in a small house very close to the center of the city. I started going to primary school at the age of 7. I had a happy childhood because my parents are very cheerful and intelligent people. They raised me very well. When I was 10 years old, my parents decided to move to the USA and that was a big change in my life because I was very young and I had to leave all of my friends. Luckily I learned English very quickly and life in the States became easier for me.

What lessons did you learn from your childhood/growing years?
Living in the United States, I traveled a lot and I learned English and about their history. I also learned a lot about discrimination. There are still parts of the U.S that have racism problems where some white Americans don't approve of African-Americans and they treat them like they are worth less. I learned to treat everyone in the same respectful manner, not matter what color their skin is or what religion they choose to believe in. That is the lesson I value the most. I also traveled a lot as a child and I love seeing new places and meeting new people. Seeing how we are all different in our tradition and ways, it all comes from the heart.

What is your environmental advocacy?
I am against pollution of the water. Water is, and always will be, the source of life! Only 0.3% of water on earth is drinkable and even today, more than a million people don't have access to clean drinking water. Daily, 22,000 people die because of that. I often hear people say after the war for oil follows the war for water.

MISS BOTSWANA | Onalenna Kessy Gaopalelwe
Age: 20
Height: 173 cm.
Weight: 46 kilos
Measurements: 82-69.5-89
Plant more trees, Save water and stop wild fires.

Describe your childhood when you were growing up from 8 to 13 years old.
My growing years were filled with happiness, laughter, pain and tears. I grew up with my married parents and two younger brothers with my dads' family. My dad was working at the city and we were residing in the small town. Staying with relatives was hard because sometimes they would starve us and we got to eat only when my mum returned from work. We moved out to rent a place when I was 9 years old. When I was 1, my mom got transferred to work in the city and I had to be responsible for my brothers. Staying with brothers meant doing all the household chores by myself. My mum returned to us when I was 12 and life became better again.

The love that my dad gave us vanished just like that without any cause. Life became hard growing up lacking some things while my dad existed. Since I was 12, I never felt a father's love but only my mums' love.

What lessons did you learn from your childhood/growing years?
From my childhood experience I learnt that a problem-free life never makes a strong person and obstacle-free roads never make good drivers. So I turned all the negative situations I encountered into a positive driving force to a brighter future. I did not allow the situation to hinder the life that I planned. So, the biggest lesson that I learnt is, that if life gives you lemons add some sugar and make lemonade. Simply meaning, no matter how much pain and suffering you encounter in life, you will always find an equivalent amount of joy to keep you going in life. This is the motto that I am living upon.

What is your most memorable moment?
The most memorable moment was when I got admitted at the university. I was so excited and proud of myself for the fact that despite being sent back home because of school fees, I made it through. I realized that I am approaching the door to my big dreams. I will now be able to help my mother through the personal allowance we were given at school. It is the most memorable moment because it was time for perseverance despite the entire struggle that I had gone through.

What is your environmental advocacy?
I am going to hold educational talk shows in schools to raise awareness about the importance of taking care of the environment. The reason why I want conquer the schools is that I want to raise environmental awareness in children so that they can grow up well informed about environmental issues. I am also going to be involved in tree planting project and litter picking…I am going to do all these projects to motivate people about the importance of planting trees and that it should be in our hearts to pick litter knowing that a little effort done can benefit the whole world. So I want to do all these programs to awaken the conscience in people's hearts.
MISS BRAZIL | Luisa de Almeida Lopes
Age: 20
Height: 175 cm.
Weight: 59 kilos
Measurements: 90-66-95
I learned that we are all equal before God and that respect is a necessary ingredient for us to get along and live together and have peace. It doesn't matter what is one's color, gender, age, culture, nationality, social status or religion. We have to agree to disagree. Having grown up with 2 siblings, I quickly learned that conflict will arise between people and if you don't learn to respect the other's rights, than you lose your own. I learned that it doesn't matter if you are rich or poor, we are all equal, we all have the same needs and therefore we all share this planet and because of that, we must care for the environment.

Describe your childhood when you were growing up from 8 to 13 years old.
I remember school a lot, I have a good recollection of my school mates, going to English classes, swimming and volleyball competitions. It was a nice time in my life , in which I made strong friendships that last through this date. Also, it was during this time that I entered my first beauty contest, which I was picked by my mates to represent my class and to my surprise, I won that contest. My family was very supportive of me and that the beginning of my interest in representing a group of people, which later turned into an opportunity to represent more important causes.

What lessons did you learn from your childhood/growing years?
I learned that we are all equal beofe God and that respect is a necessary ingredient for us to get along and live together and have peace. It doesn't matter what is one's color, gender, age, culture, nationality, social status or religion. We have to agree to disagree. Having grown up with 2 siblings. I learned that it does not matter if you are rich or poor, we are all equal , we all have the same needs and therefore we all share this planet and because of that, we must care for the environment.

What is your most memorable moment?
When I was 16 years old, I was the only winner of a school raffle of a free trip to Europe. I lived with a host family in England and visited Spain during the Navidad, which is at Christmas time, and also Scotland which has one of the highest mountains for skiing. It was then that I realized that there is a great difference between cultures and we must celebrate the difference which makes us so unique.

What is your environmental advocacy?
Clean sewers and segregate waste.

MISS CAMEROON | Estelle Crescence Essame
Age: 25
Height: 171 cm.

Regular is the key for success. Failures are compelling moments for thorough review of one's route; success is compelling too, but to higher summits. Life and people are not always fair and honest, but always try to be fair and honest yourself

Describe your childhood when you were growing up from 8 to 13 years old.
It was the forming years for me. It is also this period that I discovered modeling and registered for training.

What lessons did you learn from your childhood/growing years?
Failures are compelling moments for a thorough review of one's route. Success is compelling too but it is on a totally different level. Being a regular and kind person is one of the keys to success. Life and people are not always fair and honest, but always try to be fair and honest to yourself.

What is your most memorable moment?
The saddest moment: the loss of my father when I was 18 years old. The happiest moment of growing-up years: my first runway show when I was 15.

What is your environmental advocacy?
I will lead an advocacy program with my association Coeur de Miss to lead the government to adopt a law stating that it is mandatory to replace by at least two or three (02 or 03) trees for each cut by the timber companies. There will be procedures of control with sanctions and incentives. I will show the exemplarity by holding "one person, one tree" campaigns in the towns of Cameroon and all over the world. This advocacy can be supported by WWF in all the countries.

I grew up with my 3 sisters in my hometown of Belle River, Ontario. We attended school together and played organized sports. I am very close with my sisters and consider them to be my best friends.

What lessons did you learn from your childhood/growing years?
My childhood taught me to experience new things, learn from experience, and to never regret. MISS CAYMAN ISLANDS | Samantha Widmer
Age: 23
Height: 175 cm.
Weight: 70 kilos
Measurements: 91-81-97
I believe that no matter what I decide to pursue in life, I should always give one hundred percent to each decision I make... It is not until we push ourselves beyond what we believe we can achieve that we may find our true potential as human beings. I, therefore, believe in taking chances and seeing where they take me.

Please describe your growing -up years when you were 8 years until the age of 13.
I realized at a young age that I had a special talent for interacting with people and performing on stage. I would relish at the opportunity to organize a birthday party , perform in the school musical or compete in a dance competition. It was a sense of personal satisfaction and inner confidence that naturally came to me. Also many of my evenings were spent joining my brothers in games of squash , softball and golf, hoping that one day I would be as good as them. My experience playing alongside the competitive boys provided me with mental toughness and perseverance that I have used both in my job and amateur golf career.

What lessons did you learn from your childhood/growing years?
I have realized from these experiences that life is too short to not take chances and begin to explore my inner self. There are opportunities like Miss Earth that have come my way and I am excited to pursue them. One of the main concerns I have with young boys and girls today is a lack of self confidence and belief in themselves. Through my role as a sister and second mother, co-worker, teammate and friend, I have come to see my true potential as a young woman. It is with this inner strength that I hope to continue to grow and reach my goals in the future, while being a role model to the youth of my country.

What is your most memorable moment?
The most memorable time in my life has been my mother's recent diagnosis and recovery from stage four colon cancer. The diagnosis came as a shock to our family after a routine examination discovered three tumors in her colon. The colon cancer also spread to her lungs , liver and various other vital organs. I have witnessed an inner strength in my mum that is rare to find in a cancer survivor of her condition. She has beaten all odds and managed to fight her way to a healthy recovery, with minor complications and side effects from medications. I have spent every day in the hospital since her arrival back to the island in May 2010. I believe her courage has helped me to realize that there is nothing more important in life than happy and healthy family and friends.

What is your environmental advocacy?
Reef cleanups to save aquatic life; Tree planting and creation of composite waste sites; School tours promoting environmental awareness; Waste reduction in office buildings; Electricity reduction through solar panels; Continue to educate and encourage the local and international population about the importance of taking pride in our country's resources and protecting the phenomenal diversity of species that my Cayman Islands holds.

When I was in school, I joined a lot of team-competitions. It made me realize the importance of teamwork and the importance of helping each other.

Describe your childhood when you were growing up from 8 to 13 years old.
Just like all girls, I loved to play with my friends and I was curious about everything. Everyday, all I expected was going to school studying and playing with my friends.

When I was 10, my father passed away so my mother had to raise me, and my three sisters all by herself.

It was very hard for a woman to do it, but she did it without complaining. Sometimes, she also took us with her to volunteer in the temple and hospitals.

When I was in elementary school, I joined the school orchestra and I fell deeply in love with music. Aside from the orchestra, I also learned the Chinese instrument- Guzheng.

What lessons did you learn from your childhood/growing years?
When I was in school, I joined a lot of team-competitions. It made me realize the importance of teamwork and the importance of helping each other.

Another lesson I learned had to with my father's passing away. It made me more understanding and levelheaded compared to others. And it made me realize that I should cherish the time I have with my family, friends, and everyone I love.

What is your most memorable moment?
My most memorable moment was when I joined Miss Taiwan in 2009. I won three awards that night: Miss Photogenic, Miss Bikini and Best in Evening Dress. I also ended up winning the second prize. I was impressed with the cheers of the audience. My mother, who was also part of the audience, was filled with happiness and pleasure. I think that night is the best gift I have ever given to her.

What is your environmental advocacy?
Although Taiwan is an important transportation hub in Asia, it is also a country with frequent natural disasters like earthquakes and typhoons, and it also has a high population density and lacks natural resources. Therefore, focusing on the integration of environment and resources, conservation of land is a must to ensure the conservation of the country, symbiosis and sustainable development in Taiwan.

In Taiwan, there is an inadequate protection of land and water resources. Inadequate forest conservation in the river upstream and over-deforestation in the river midstream lead to insufficient groundwater, causing floods and drought frequently. If the Ministry of Environment and Resources can handle all these water resources, including upstream, midstream and downstream, it will help to integrate the conservation of environmental resources and the use of land and resources to achieve full coordination.

We must consider both the environmental protection and how the natural resources can be of use to human beings at the same time. I suggest making the national park authority a unit for management. It can manage through many counties. The purpose is for species or resource maintenance, so that the national parks' concerns and the indigenous activities may be combined. The aboriginal and traditional economics and the protection of the environment can be combined into national park managing plans such as, allowing indigenous peoples to hunt in a controlled setting so that not only can the conservation of natural species be implemented, but the counseling of aboriginal employment to maintain the indigenous culture can also be preserved.

Nowadays the issue of carbon emission is becoming more and more important. It is certainly a really serious problem for us in the future. But we can actually easily help reduce carbon emissions in our daily life by taking public transportation or riding a bicycle instead of driving a car, and by not littering. We can help by starting with ourselves because it's everyone's responsibility to protect the earth.
MISS COLOMBIA | Diana Marin
Age: 22
Height: 180 cm.
Weight: 58 kg
Measurements: 82-60-92
My life ambition is to be one of the most recognized psychologists of Colombia dedicated to helping kids with different types of problems, and travel around the world so I can meet new cultures, life styles and learn about life to help people with my own knowledge.

Describe your childhood when you were growing up from 8 to 13 years old.
When I was eight years old, I lived in Cali, Colombia with my parents, in a place that was right next to an entertainment center where we could play with my friends every day after arriving home from school I lived there for three years and then went to live south of the city to a bigger place where I had a beautiful time, I could skate and ride bikes. My parents were also happy because there were also activities and events for the parents. I liked to read stories and I used to get together with my other friends and read them the stories. I was very friendly and cheerful. I felt very sociable with my friends because friendship was essential for me. I also liked to share with my family on trips to other cities and to celebrate important dates with them.

What lessons did you learn from your childhood/growing years?
I learned many things in my childhood. Things like to be an honest and faithful person that helped me to build a better personality. I liked leading groups to do activities like trips to museums and zoos so that we children would different and we could learn different things everyday. Solidarity was also a feature that I stressed and I still stand as a person who helps others. That is one of the most important lesson I learned from my childhood days. I learned from my mom because she is an exceptional person and by her example, I try to follow the same steps she took. I also learned to take my life with love and organization, to go practice and solve my problems with discipline and compliance with the regulations of the home and environment that surround me.

What is your most memorable moment?
My most memorable moment was attending college. During first day of classes, I realized I was doing what I wanted to do, surrounded by people who had the same personal aspirations.

What is your environmental advocacy?
My environmental advocacy is being aware that there are problems and also that we have to help and try to decrease further devastation. I look after the environment by not throwing garbage in the streets , learning to recycle and everyday, I try to get people around me to do the same, promoting the culture of my country do the same and make the habit of recycling at home a priority or first ranking. For example: one container or bin for the papers, another one for the biodegradable and the other container for glass. Finally to spread the message in all universities with advertising. We need to make people aware of what is happening to us and that global warming can be catastrophic if we do not do something about it now. As Miss Earth, I started to visit schools in my community to teach kids to recycle and to love the planet , the city and the neighborhood.

In Colombia I am very worried about the psychological effect of the kids due to the violence, because they move form the rural areas to the city where they have to experience a traumatic change of environment that will affect their development.

Education has always been very important to me. My family paid great attention to self-development. My ambition is to have self-realization, to bring happiness to the world and make at least one man truly happy.

What is your attitude towards success and failure?
Failures and mistakes – like a new experience for you, you should understand the reasons , why it has happened so and you make special conclusions – why it happened. And success gives one more stimuli to go forward.

What lessons did you learn from your childhood/growing years?
In childhood, I was going in for rhythmic gymnastic and all my free time I had devoted to sports. Since childhood, it has always been sports. My first victory, my first gold medal. It gives me this amazing feeling of strength. You can't compare with anything. You feel you are a winner and a real hero. Of course, there are are also failures but they are always easily forgotten, like a short unpleasant moment.

What is your most memorable moment?
My childhood was devoted to sports and the sad and happy moments have made me only stronger and confident. My first failures , my first tears made me only believe more in myself. Sports was a big part of my childhood and my memories are always connected with rhythmic gymnastics.

What is your environmental advocacy?
Development of Hybrid Cars. Because one of the problems causing air pollution comes from the exhaust of our cars today
