December 1, 2009 was the world AIDS day, simultaneously Filipinos also celebrates a week long celebration. Filipinos are now highly opened minded for this taboo issue. It shows on how they actively participate on that certain advocacy.

Moreover, AIDS issue is the Philippines now a day is not discreet anymore. There are many Filipino advocates and even victims are spreading the news and awareness to the society about this predicament. In this scenario, we can now minimize and control such virus if the Filipinos consciousnesses are knowledgeably enough about AIDS
According to data by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Philippines has seen an “alarming” increase in HIV cases in the past year, especially among overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) and men who have sex with men (MSM).
As of September 2009, according to the sources, 33 million are HIV positive worldwide. Since year 1984, Philippines recorded 4,138 Filipinos are positive and it includes this year 2009 for about 528 Filipinos are infected. For this month of September 56 Filipinos recorded as positive.“Last May, the country had 85 reported cases of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the highest ever in the country. That’s like 3 people a day, more cases than the A (H1N1) virus,” said Danton Remoto, UNDP Communications officer, at the country’s 1st National Conference on MSM, transgender, and HIV last July 22.
All HIV cases were transmitted through sexual contact, with 36% of cases transmitted through homosexual contact and 89% of cases caused by unprotected sex.
HIV patients are also getting younger and younger, with more HIV cases coming from the 20 to 24 age group (29% of total cases this year).
This is very alarming; the rapid growth of the victim in such virus may affect the entire nation. The Philippines government should do something about it. We, the Filipinos as an individual are responsible and we play a huge role to minimize this virus. What is important is how the infected person, spread the news and not the virus. Avoid stigma in our society and let’s support this advocacy
